about

Spending Time Sober is a song about the complexity of relationships that reinforce addiction. A heavy intro reminiscent of jazz saxophonist Kamasi Washington’s epic composition style gives way to daft Punk-esque vocals underscored by a dance groove, all culminating in a fierce bout of instrumental interaction.

I wrote this song after the difficult experience of having to reevaluate some relationships due to how deeply based in addiction they had become. Society normalizes so many unhealthy behaviors that it can be tough to maintain a balanced perspective on whether or not certain relationships are actually positive for one’s personal growth. However, I chose to keep the tune upbeat because, at the end of the day, positive human connection is one of the best ways of preventing addiction in the first place.

The B-side of this single is a fun little funk jam taken from the sessions for my forthcoming album Calculated Discomfort, which comes out August 17th. I’ve also thrown a mind-bending and speaker thumping remix of my song “Not Amazing” done by my mega talented friend Elijah Jamal.
